Elementary Russian (Russian 1 & Russian 2) 

Introduction to basic Russian grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and everyday conversational skills through communicative, task- and project-based, and multimedia approaches. Students engage with a variety of texts and media, including songs, short literary texts, film, and performative arts. The course develops interpretive listening and reading skills, as well as interpersonal speaking and presentational writing at the novice level.
Prerequisite: No prior knowledge of Russian required.

Intermediate Russian (Russian 3 & Russian 4)

Development of speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills through more complex grammar, literary texts, songs, film, and communicative, task- and project-based learning, with selected activities in performative arts. Students further develop interpretive reading and listening, interpersonal communication, and presentational speaking and writing skills.
Prerequisite: Completion of Elementary Russian or equivalent proficiency. New students must complete a placement test.

Advanced Russian (Russian 103 A–B)

Advanced study of Russian language and culture emphasizing fluency, critical analysis of literary texts and film, and sophisticated communication through communicative, multimedia, project-based, and performative arts approaches. Students strengthen advanced interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational speaking and writing skills in academic and cultural contexts.
Prerequisite: Completion of Intermediate Russian or equivalent proficiency. New students must complete a placement test.

Heritage Russian (Russian 6 A–B)

Designed for heritage speakers to strengthen literacy, grammar, formal speaking, reading, and writing skills through literary texts, film, songs, multimedia resources, and communicative and performative arts-based activities. The course develops interpretive reading and listening, as well as advanced interpersonal and presentational communication skills.
Prerequisite: Ability to understand and speak Russian at a conversational level. New students must complete a placement test.

 Russian Speaking Student Association - The Russian Speaking Student Association (RSSA) is a student-run organization that strives to highlight the culture and traditions of the Russian-speaking community on our campus. If you are interested in expanding your knowledge of Russian/Eastern European/Central Asian history, culture, and the Russian language by participating in educational and fun social activities, this student organization is the place for you. Speaking fluent Russian is not necessary - everyone is welcome to join!

 Troika - TROIKA is an undergraduate journal in Eastern European, Eurasian, and Slavic studies at the University of California, Berkeley, founded in 2011. They publish work made by undergraduates from around the world, including undergraduate academic papers, poetry and prose writing, translations, visual artwork and photography, etc.

Practice Russian Outside of the Classroom

Russian Conversation Hour - The Slavic Department hosts a Russian Conversation Hour on Fridays every semester. If you’re learning Russian, this is a great opportunity for you to practice your conversational skills and meet new people! Join us for tea and Russian sweets in a cozy setting where you'll make lifelong friendships.

 Language Exchange Program - The SLC Language Exchange Program provides a platform for Cal students to share their language skills and cultural knowledge through language practice and community socials.
