Take a Class

All students at Berkeley are welcome to take a number of courses (taught in English) and language courses that fulfill breadth requirements in Arts and Literature, Philosophy and Values, Historical Studies, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and International Studies, as well as courses in the University program of Freshmen and Sophomore seminars.

The department offers instruction in BCS (Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian), Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian as well as the non-Slavic languages Armenian and Hungarian. The department offers special classes for heritage speakers of Russian and courses in Russian/English, English/Russian oral and written translation.

Non-UC Berkeley Students

During the Summer

Our summer courses are generally open for registration by anyone — not just UC Berkeley students.  We offer a variety of language and culture courses each summer, taught by qualified UCB instructors.  All summer course registration goes through the Berkeley Summer Sessions office, whose website outlines the enrollment process, tuition fees, and more.

During the Academic Year

UC Berkeley students have enrollment priority. Instructor approval is required for all visiting students and eligibility requirements may apply; enrollment is not guaranteed.

Students at California Community Colleges and CSUs:

Enroll through a Cross-Enrollment Program (select institutions only) or Intersegmental Cross-Enrollment

Undergraduate Students at other UC Campuses:

Select language classes (currently: Polish, Hungarian, and Ukrainian) are offered through UC Online.  Courses not offered through UC Online can be enrolled through the Intercampus Visitor Program or Simultaneous Enrollment.

Graduate Students:

See enrollment options here

High school students, members of the public, and interested auditors:

Enroll through UC Berkeley Extension Concurrent Enrollment Enrollment and registration fees apply, in addition to per-unit fees for the course(s) of the student's choice. For details on Concurrent Enrollment requirements, deadlines, applications and fees, please visit their website

Courses through Concurrent Enrollment can be taken for credit/letter grade, pass/no pass, or no credit; registration costs vary depending on the grading option. If you do not need grades or a transcript for your coursework or are interested in auditing, enrollment for no credit is equivalent to auditing -- please express this in the Notes of your class enrollment application. See UC Berkeley’s official auditing policy, effective January 2020 Approval of no-credit auditors, and enrollment in the class, is subject to instructor and department approval. Concurrent Enrollment fees still apply for auditors, but the per-unit cost is reduced.

In general, Concurrent Enrollment applications are not officially approved and signed by the instructor until the first week of class, as part of the approval is based on the number of spaces available.

When choosing classes, the Program recommends contacting the class instructor to introduce yourself and your intentions for class enrollment. You can indicate previous relevant experience here (such as language experience), as well as in the Notes to your Concurrent Enrollment class application. You will also need the 5-digit class number, found on the Schedule of Classes.
