Concurrent Enrollment is a program offered through UC Berkeley Extension that allows people from outside UC Berkeley to enroll in campus classes without being admitted to UC Berkeley. Students pay per unit, are formally enrolled, receive grades, have access to CalCentral and bCourses, and receive the same system access as matriculated Berkeley students (Berkeley ID number and email address, library use, Calnet login, Zoom account, etc.). Students from select institutions, other UCs, or community colleges can enroll throughother visiting student programs, with lower costs and easier registration processes.
We recommend waiting to act on applications, until the start of instruction. UC Berkeley students still have one more enrollment phase, opening Monday January 13, and still may plan to enroll in additional courses. UC Berkeley students should be accommodated first.
CE students can be: visiting international students (undergrad and master's students) in exchange programs likeBerkeley International Study Program (BISP) andBerkeley Global Access, high school students, lifelong learners, or Berkeley undergrads taking one or two courses to finish their degree. Usually they will note their program and student status in their application.
Our responsibility is to approve or deny students' class enrollment applications. Either GSIs or faculty supervisors can approve/deny applications, and Amanda does as well. Each application requires two approvals: from an instructor and from the Undergraduate Advisor, before students are fully enrolled -- we try to check several times each weekday to keep up with your responses so students are enrolled quickly. If there are delays in student enrollments, it may be because we have not approved the application yet.
No one is obligated to approve enrollment applications and you are free to establish policies on visiting students and auditors for the classes you teach or supervise. GSIs, please communicate with your faculty supervisors to decide how to act on applications.
CE is the campus's preferred method of auditing by non-Berkeley students (see the campus auditing policy)because students register and occupy a seat in your class, and receive Berkeley systems access and logins. Allowing auditors or visiting students is up to your discretion, keeping within the guidelines of the auditing policy. The No Credit/lower-fee option mentioned in the auditing policy is subject to your department chair's approval and requires additional steps for the chair, instructor, student, CE staff, and the Undergraduate Advisor. Questions about fees and financial aid should be directed to extension@berkeley.edu.
UC Berkeley students have enrollment priority. We recommend waiting until the start of instruction to approve/deny CE applications, especially if your class has a waiting list. You can email students to let them know when you will respond to applications. We also recommend contacting students to confirm their interest in your class before approving their application -- from experience, students apply for several classes and do not attend all the classes they have applied for.
Until both you and the Undergraduate Advisor approve applications, CE students do not have access to your class's bCourses page or appear on your CalCentral rosters, nor have Calnet logins to access these sites. They will need to be given syllabi and readings (and Zoom links for remote class meetings or office hours) directly by email until then. If there are delays in student enrollments, it may be because the Undergraduate Advisor has not approved the application yet.
If someone has submitted an application for your class, you will receive an email from bcs@berkeley.edu with the subject line "Pending Concurrent Enrollment Application(s) for...". Please also check your Spam or Junk folders.
To view and approve/deny applications (detailed instructions here):
-
Log in toCalCentral.berkeley.edu
-
In Faculty Resources, click on eForms Action Center on the bottom right.
-
Scroll down to see a list of applications for your class(es). Each application also displays the class's live enrollment and waitlist totals, and any notes the student has provided (their field of study, language ability, student status).
-
For each application, find the Form Action drop-down menu and select "Approved" or "Denied", then click "Submit."To contact the student (to send Zoom links or documents, to inform them why you are denying or waiting to respond to their application, to discuss their language placement), find their email address on their application, or let me know and I can contact them. Please pay attention to the enrollment totals for your class before approving. Approving CE applications will enroll the student regardless of the enrollment limit of your class. Do not approve CE applications if your class is fully enrolled and no seats are available in your classroom.
-
Once you act, I will do the same to the application -- both your and my approval are required to fully enroll a student. If there are delays in student enrollments appearing in your roster, it may be because the Undergraduate Advisor has not approved the application yet.
The Concurrent Enrollment website is here, and students with questions about the application and fees should contact CE staff at extension@berkeley.edu. If you have questions about BISP (students usually identify themselves on their application), BISP staff can assist.
