Slavic 161: Readings in Czech Literature

MWF 9-10, 6115 Dwinelle. Instructor: Ellen Langer.

Units: 4 Satisfies L&S Arts & Literature breadth requirement.

Readings begin with very short contemporary (21st-century) stories. Over the course of the semester, students will read texts from progressively earlier periods, introducing them to the works of important Czech authors in the original. The majority of texts will be from the 19th and 20th centuries, but students will have the opportunity to explore prose and poetry from even earlier periods through a selection of very short readings near the end of the semester.

Weekly readings, classroom discussion, short essays and/or translations, take-home final.

Prerequisite: Czech 116A OR consent of instructor. Open also to native speakers and heritage speakers with sufficient reading skills.
