Introduction to Old Church Slavic. Assigned translations and sight readings of selected texts for class meetings. Phonology, inflectional morphology, syntax, and vocabulary, and their linguistic implications. The origin, development, and history of early Slavic writing. Literary, cultural, and historical functions and context. Some additional reading. Quizzes, two midterm exams, and a final exam.
Texts: F.J. Whitfield, Old Church Slavic Reader (Berkeley, 2004; ISBN 1-57201-065-7), plus xeroxed readings. We will purchase the book as a class directly from the publisher.
Prerequisites: Reading knowledge of a Slavic language.
