This course is designed to familiarize the student with major topics and events of the cultural history of the Slavic, East European, and Eurasian peoples and lands. We will start with their ancient origins and move forward chronologically, ending with 21^st century issues of identity and socio-politics. Students will expand their historical knowledge and think critically about accepted portrayals of this region in relation to the wider world (especially “the West” and “the East,” or “Europe” and “Asia”). Students will also develop their ability to interpret and understand different kinds of cultural documents, including canonical works of art and literature, and situate these documents with respect to broader historical developments.

Readings will come from a variety of sources and include literature, non-fictional primary sources, and scholarship from various disciplines. Besides written texts, we will also consider works of visual art, architecture, music, and several films screened throughout the session.

No prerequisites. Taught in English with readings in English.

Required of Slavic majors in the Russian/East European/Eurasian Languages & Cultures track.
