Slavic 280: Chekhov: Prose and Drama/Theater

The course will combine two formats: the usual graduate seminar conducted in English; and close reading and discussion in Russian (along the lines of Academic Russian).

In the seminar mode, we will consider Chekhov’s historical / cultural position between the two centuries and literary stance with regard to 19th century realism and 20th century modernism; read his major texts and representative works of criticism seeking to define Chekhov’s place among a multitude of isms.

In the close reading mode, we will read and discuss select stories and plays essential for your Russian proficiency; textual analysis; and pedagogical training.

Prerequisite: graduate standing or consent of instructor.
