Travel
The closest major airport to Berkeley is Oakland International Airport. It is served by a number of airlines, and particularly by JetBlue Airways and Southwest Airlines, both of which are well known for their low cost service. The other major airport is San Francisco International, which is served by all major airlines (including the low cost carrier Airtran). For more information on these airports, consult
flyoakland.com and flysfo.com.
The easiest way to reach Berkeley is with the Bay Area Rapid Transit or BART. The station called “Downtown Berkeley” (on the Richmond line) is only a few blocks from the UC Berkeley campus, the site of all conference events. From Oakland airport, it is necessary to take a shuttle bus to the BART station at Coliseum; from there one takes any train to Oakland City Center, and then changes to a Richmond train traveling north to Berkeley. From the San Francisco airport, one takes any train to the Balboa Park station, and then changes to a Richmond train traveling east to Berkeley. For more information on the BART system, consult
bart.gov.
One can also travel to Berkeley with the Bayporter (shared van service). For more information, consult bayporter.com.
It is not advisable to travel by taxi, especially from the San Francisco airport, as the cost is prohibitive.
Weather
The weather is in general mild and pleasant. Be aware, however, that
Berkeley is in northern, not southern California. This means that mornings
and evenings can be foggy and chilly. Daytime temperatures usually run
around 60 - 70 degrees F.
